Nursery Makeover Update...there's paint!

As time is flying, I'm getting so anxious about finishing my baby's nursery!

Last I left you guys, I shared with you in this post what my old studio looked like before and how it looked primed...if you forgot, here are some refresher pics...

My bright, fun colored walls...the before...

...and during, covered with regular white primer...

Now here's what it looks like with the nursery paint on the walls!!

Yay! It's coming along...very hard to tell in this pic, but the color is a frosty pale blue.

I also painted the trim, table and dresser a nice white called Frost from Behr.

I'll be sharing how I revamped/refreshed my old vintage dresser soon (on the right in the top pic) but here's a sneak peek...

Mommy Changes & Fears

Today, I feel like being transparent.

Not because my skin is pale or anything...that's another story all together.

I'm getting a little nervous and, well, scared.

I was okay the first two trimesters of my pregnancy, but now that it's getting down to the wire, everything is getting so real...real fast too.

My mind has been spinning with different thoughts and yeah, I know God will guide me through mommyhood....but truth is, my human mentality can't help but go over all of my weaknesses...

What if I drop him?

What if I teach him the wrong things?

What if I lash out at him with my temper?

Can I be the mommy he needs?

Can I show him what a Christian woman should be?

Can I teach him to love Jesus no matter what?

Will I be able to show him unconditional love?

Will I show him the right way to treat people?

Am I ready to be super selfless?

Am I ready to put his needs first?

Can I show him what it means to pray?

Will I know how to communicate with him?

I haven't been up all night with my thoughts, but while I'm busy with my day {blogging, cleaning, designing} something will just pop in from the back of my subconscious and it makes me stop in my tracks...

I'm not even a "real" mom yet and I'm leaning on Jesus already! We need someone to guide us and teach us. We need that hope, that solid Rock, a place where our feet are planted as this world shifts around our child...if I'm unstable in faith, my son will be too...

The one thing that keeps me from going insane, is knowing that my Jesus doesn't change...though I will. I will have to change to be the mommy my boy needs me to be...I will have to change in order to adjust to this new schedule and life...I need to change for this new role...

Luckily no matter how much I change, He stays the same...and that thought is the best one yet!!

Recipe: Red Velvet Cheesecake Brownies

Strapped for cash and too pregnant to want to go to the stores for Valentines Day (crowds *cringe*)

I decided the best gift for my hardworking husband was a nice desert.

He is not picky and loves sweets (especially if I experiment, then he's my taste tester hehe)

I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to make, until I saw this post from Sweet Pea's Kitchen through Pinterest.

Funny thing, sweet pea is actually my aunt's nickname for me! but that's not why I chose this desert...

it just looked amazing and I NEEDED to make them!!

It was actually super easy and fun to do.

Here is the recipe with my own highlighted notes in case you care :)

Ingredients:

1/2 cup butter
2-oz dark chocolate, coarsely chopped *I used milk chocolate chips, 2-oz*
1 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 tsp red food coloring
2/3 cup all purpose flour
1/4 tsp salt
8-oz cream cheese, room temperature
1/3 cup sugar
1 large egg
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350F. Butter the bottom and sides of a 8 inch metal baking pan (I used an 8" glass dish, worked well). Put a long piece of parchment paper in the bottom of the pan, letting the parchment extend up two sides of the pan and overhang slightly on both ends. (This will make it easy to remove the bars from the pan after they have baked.) Butter the parchment. (Foil will also work just fine, but spray it with a cooking or baking spray.)
In a small, heatproof bowl, melt butter and chocolate together. Stir until combined and very smooth. Set aside to cool for a few minutes. (I threw it in the micromave to melt and it was good. I wasn't patient enough!)
In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, eggs, vanilla extract and red food coloring. Add chocolate mixture and stir until smooth. Add flour and salt and stir until just combined and no streaks of dry ingredients remain. (You can add another 1/2 tsp of coloring if you want it more vibrant.)
Pour into prepared pan and spread into an even layer.
To prepare cheesecake mixture, beat cream cheese, sugar, egg and vanilla extract in a medium bowl until smooth. Distribute the cheesecake mixture in 8 dollops over batter in the pan. Swirl in with a knife or spatula. (Knife worked way better for me!)
Bake for 35-40 minutes, until brownies and cheesecake are set. A knife (or toothpick) inserted into the cheesecake mixture should come out clean and the edges will be lightly browned.
Let cool completely in pan on a cooling rack before lifting out the parchment paper to remove the brownies.
Cut into squares and serve!!

Sunday Devotion: Emotional Purity

"Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life."

Proverbs 4:23

In the past four years, the Lord has placed a message on my heart about, well, the heart. He used my own testimony to teach me something...this is what lead me to write "The Palace Keepers", a book about protecting the purity of the heart. Right now I have it on e-book and it will be in book form very soon.

The main thing God showed me is that purity is not only about our bodies but that true purity starts in the heart! Sometimes Christianity spends so much effort and time on telling young people that they must abstain from sexual sin, which is of course necessary and true, but they don't tell them HOW to do it.

We try and "reform" our ways, but since the main issue lies in our emotions, we tend to go back to the sin and never fully get over it.

Emotional purity is the clean state of our emotional health. If we know we have to keep our bodies clean and healthy, why don't we think that same way about our hearts?

Let's break down Proverbs 4:23:

"Keep thy heart..."

This means it's OUR job, to make sure it is following the Lord. But how?

"...with all diligence..."

Be responsible and accountable. Ask God every day how to guard your heart and obey Him at all times.

But why?

"...out of it are the issues of life."

Because our heart can create and lead us into different situations and we need to be ready now!

Jeremiah 17:9 tells us:

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

Today, think about your heart and it's health.

What sort of things are you pouring into it? What kind of music are you listening to, or movies you are watching? Who is your heart attaching to? Are they following the Lord or leading you astray?

Purity of your emotions is so important! If you don't protect your heart, you will eventually allow someone else to have control over it, and thus, they end up controlling your emotions.

Pray and ask God to reveal what you can do so protect the purity of your heart!

Dear Jackie: A Letter to My Puppy Girl

As I wrote a previous blog post a little while ago, I glanced at my feet and saw our Siberian Husky, Jackie, curled up and sleeping. I couldn't help but grin to myself. If you ever saw her curled up, you would too :)

See what I mean? Too cute for words!

It got me thinking how I don't talk about her enough on my blog...so today, I decided I will write Jackie a letter. Huskies are super smart buttttt I doubt she would be able to read this! Eh, here goes...

Dear Jackie,

You were so little when we got you two years ago! You were only 9 weeks old. We can't believe how much you've grown and matured.

Thank you for being so loving and forgiving, even when we lose our temper or cool. Sometimes, it seems logical that we would want two socks to be together...we see now that you just needed more toys and attention.

Before you came, there were a lot of things we newlyweds were dealing with. You taught us to put others first, how to manage our time wisely and above all, laugh no matter what was happening! Oh, you are one silly pup and you do the dopiest things, but I wouldn't want you any other way!!

Thank you for always supporting my work. I know when I'm in the studio, it can make you sad because you just want all the attention. How do I know? Well, you do drop "subtle" hints like bringing me your ball and laying on my feet.

I'm sorry for not giving you as much attention as I know you need. The truth is, you can never get enough love and attention! You're such a love hog...and that helps me in being less selfish.

Also, thanks for being my best bud and keeping me company when daddy has to go to work early. I love my cuddle bug! You are so sweet, even if you do get your hair all over the pillow :)

Oh yes, and thank you for all of your helpful paws in the kitchen! I know deep down you want to be a chef...even if it's just for the scraps. When you curl around my feet at the counter and practically numb my toes, I remind myself how much you really need me, even if I get upset that I can't move!

To sum things up, here are the main things I'm thankful for:

I realized today that I rarely talk about music on here and I was like "What?!"

I absolutely thrive on music, especially songs that glorify and worship Jesus.

Can you relate to this...

As you sit in the car, driving and what not, your mind spins with events that have recently taken place in your life. Then all of a sudden, a song comes on the radio and the lyrics just hit you like pigeon poo.

WOW!! God knew exactly what I needed to hear in that song.

Have you had this happen??

I personally only listen to Christian music. The Lord convicted me about this years ago and it's been a rewarding commitment. Recently, I heard "Heir of a Kingdom" by Camaryn Rogers and was blown away!

The lyrics talk about being in poverty to sin and how God took everything and turned it into riches!

Though the song is fun and peppy, I can't help but cry when I hear it.

It reminds me how dark and cold I was in my old life...so alone and lost until Jesus showed up and clothed me with His righteousness. Now, I am a daughter of the King, and heir to His Kingdom!!

Thrift Store Finds: I Hit the Motherload!

Okay, remember yesterday's What I Wore post?

I told you that I got all dressed up in a cheap comfy preggo outfit to go shopping during Savers Presidents Sale. What I didn't tell you (at least I don't think I did) was that it was 50% off all clothing and shoes! Yes!

Well, here we have it folks...the time has come to feast your googly computer-glued eyes on all the great stuff I got!!

Stuff for Mommy:

Two awesome maternity jean skirts for spring & a maternity shirt!

Also picked up a nice long jean skirt (hard to find!) & ruffled orange skirt for after baby :)

Oh, and I couldn't pass up these brown Steve Madden heels. I needed some nice brown shoes for the spring. As I tried them on, my handsome hubby's eyebrows hit the ceiling haha that's good right?! ;)

Stuff for Daddy:

Since my handsome just got a new job, he needed more dressy clothes. He's been wearing his nice church outfits and I didn't want them to start getting faded now that I'll be washing them more.

So I got him four pairs of dressy pants, in various basic colors.

Topped them off with about nine collared shirts...can you tell I love him in stripes :)

He also needed a pair of brown shoes so as soon as I saw these size 13 Timberlands, I snatched them!

(Not pictured: two nice suits but I have to exchange them. They fit really weird.)

Stuff for Baby:

Seeing as though I still have two more baby showers and about nine weeks left of pregnancy (OMGoodness, ack!) I didn't go all out like I wanted for baby.

I definitely got him a sleep sack for the carseat that we can take him home in.

A couple of cute collared shirts (just like daddy) and some newborn onesies.

Oh yeah, and the cutest sneaks ever!! Also brown, like mommy and daddy's :)

Last minute, I picked up the black dress shoes. They are big but he will need them some day for church.

Okay, so I bet you're DYING to know how much I spent...

Hey ya'll, Happy President's Day!

Yeah, okay, so we don't usually do that on this holiday...blah, sue me.

I did because I'm super excited about savings.

That's right...store sales today, whoohoo!!

Though what I wore today was not bought today, it made for a nice comfy day outfit for this expecting mommy. Especially as I hit the stores...

Okay, so here's the break down of this oh-so-perfect preggo outfit:

- Elastic waist (um, a must right now) jean skirt $4 (thrifted baby!)

- Black & white knock-off Sketcher wannabe shoes from Walmart: $10

(Hey, I don't pay money just for the name. I'd thrift store it all the way if I could!)

Pin It - Jean jacket: Gap $20 (I know it was originally more, but it was on sale when I bought it a long time ago and I know the max I spent was $20...can't remember the real amount, but let's go with that.)

So in all, this outfit was around 35 buckaroos...pretty much the cost of one preggo shirt from Motherhood!

There you have it. My first post about an outfit and me taking silly pictures (my husband was grinning the entire time I was putting this post together. He thinks me and my bloggy world with bloggy friends is funny.)

I can't wait to snap some photos of all the great stuff I got at the stores today! Let's just say there was 50% off all clothing and shoes at one of my favorite thrift stores, Savers (super high quality stuff too.)

Sunday Devotion: Respect Your Elders

Yesterday, I was privileged to attend and be apart of the choir at a dear woman's memorial service, who had just recently passed away from our church. Her name was Dolores and she was like no other.

As a fairly new addition to the church myself, I only have had some interaction with Dolores, but from what little time I had spent with her came a wealth of knowledge, understanding and respect.

She had an essence about her spirit that lite up an entire room. Her wit was comical and yet smart. Her words were both full of correction and love. During her last days, I can recall her fumbling doing or saying things. Dolores would just laugh and say "If I had two brains, it'll be dangerous!"

The most significant lesson she taught, however, was the power behind prayer. How we must go to the Throne of God, no matter what we are facing or how we are feeling, to get right and to make that precious connection with Jesus. This is a treasure that I personally hold dear, as I can remember visiting her and hearing her pray over me and my husband. Dolores always put others before herself. You thought you'd visit to pray for her, and soon realize she was quick to turn the tables :)

Scripture talks a lot about respecting our church elders. It commands children to honor their father and mother, but it also let's the body of Christ know that those who have started the journey prior have not only experiences to share, but God has given them wisdom they can pass down to others.

"Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble."

1 Peter 5:5

Today, think about the elders or spiritual pillars in your church and home. Think about where God has brought them from and what He has transformed in their lives. Sometimes, I feel, we can get so caught up with entertaining youth groups and attending to the Sunday School department and forget to acknowledge our older examples.

Elders can help in so many ways, but the most significant is being a testimony to the Lord's grace and humility. Take a moment and reflect on those who are seasoned saints, and pray for them. Let's also give thanks and be grateful to have such examples around us, to enlighten our minds and uplift our spirits.

After all, a forest is not only full of fresh, young spruces...most people stand in awe at the tall, rooted trees that have stood the test of time and continue to reach towards the sky.

Amazing Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

There are times in life where one steps back and says...
"Man, this is one great cookie!!"

Last week, I had such a moment with this recipe I found on Cooks.com

I was left with a condo that smelled like heaven, a husband who couldn't wait for the next batch and a very satisfied preggo woman :)

Here's what I did:

1 1/2 sticks butter (12 tablespoons)
1 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 cup white granulated sugar
2 eggs, lightly beaten
2 1/4 cups sifted flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1 cup semi-sweet morsels

(the original recipe had nuts and raisins but I opted out.)

Preheat oven to 375°F.

In a mixing bowl, cream together butter and sugars. Add eggs.

Sift flour and measure out 2 1/4 cups. After measuring the sifted flour, sift again with remaining dry ingredients. Add the flour mixture to the creamed butter and sugar mixture. Stir in vanilla and semi-sweet morsels.

Drop the cookie batter by tablespoonfuls onto a parchment or silicone lined baking sheet. (I actually had neither, so I settled for some good ol' aluminum foil...sprayed with cooking spray & worked great!)

Bake for 10-12 minutes or until cookies are set and firm and only lightly colored.
Do not allow cookies to brown.
(Seriously, I have a habit of doing that! With this recipe though, 10-11 min is plenty and you'd be surprised how moist and perfect the cookies are if you don't let them brown on the top.)

Transfer to wire racks to cool. (I just left them on the foiled pan, whatever) This takes like two minutes.
Serve with the tallest glass of cold millk you can find and eat your little heart out!!!

As usual, since I'm only baking for two, I had lots of dough left over. This makes a bunch, so I scooped half of the leftover dough in a container for cookies the next day (per my handsome man's request) and the other half, I rolled in a nice cylinder shape, wrapped with freezer wrap, marked the date and froze it.
This dough can most likely last frozen for up to 3-4 months! But...I doubt it'll last that long in my house...

10 Ways to Stay a Loser

Okay, you failed.

Again.

And just like last time.

Stinks, doesn't it?

Yeah...we all fail at times or feel we don't measure up to a certain standard.

I know I do a lot, almost every day. And chances are, if you have blood in your veins and a pulse...you will fail again.

However, there is a way you can be redeemed.

You can be a winner even if you do fail!

Where?

Inside of you're heart...

...but, just in case you're not ready to win yet, here are 10 ways you can be sure you won't:

1.) Dwell on Your Mistakes

That's right. Them them eat away at your dignity, self-esteem and mind. It's almost impossible to have a winner's mindset when you are still obsessing over your last mistake. Keeping all of those failures fresh, there's no way you can overcome and be victorious now!

2.) Keep Comparing Yourself

Everywhere you look and everywhere you go, measure yourself against somebody else. Do it! You know there's no one as low are you are...especially when there are all these "winners" around. "How does Janet do it looking that good? What about Lindsay, her life is so much better than mine! Oh, I wish I was as smart as Danielle..." Yup, some good ol' self-comparison will kept you on your loser game.

3.) Stay Isolated

Why would anyone want to see that face when you've done so many wrong things? Just save the embarrassment and don't leave your house. It's simple! Don't talk to anyone, don't go anywhere, don't even call your BFF to complain...you don't know why she's your BFF anyway. Sticking to yourself is the best way your losery won't rub off on someone else.

4.) Wallow in Self-Pity

While you're alone, don't forget to pity yourself. A "poor me" attitude is a must to staying a loser. Let's face it; having to let go of what you've done means having to forgive yourself and move on. Who wants that?!

5.) Loathe Happiness

Caution. After your pity-party, you may want a joyful boost. Don't do it! How can you even think of being happy after failing? No-sir-re...put up a wall of sadness, grief and anger around you. It'll keep all that happy, go-lucky-laughing-feeling amazing stuff out! In fact, every time you feel the need to be happy, go back to step one. Your pride depends on it!

6.) Shun Growth

I've heard some winners say that once you fail, you can learn from your mistakes and grow into a better person. Ha! You don't want that, right? You've already worked so hard to isolate yourself from people and stay in your own negative bubble. Don't go ruining all that just because some happy hippies are trying to convert you. Why change? Sounds like more hard work to me...

7.) Encourage Verbal Abuse

Tell yourself every morning when you wake up that today you are going to suck at everything and nothing you do will be good enough. Come on, break down that self-esteem even more by allowing yourself to blow up and call yourself names. Every good loser knows how to beat themselves with their own words...don't be any different.

8.) Lash Out

Listen, you're the one that made the mistake and failed. That doesn't mean others shouldn't suffer as well! Pull them in with you on this, better yet, wear your anger over your failures on your sleeve. That way, whenever a friend tries to send you a cute text message or your boyfriend/husband tries to cheer you up with hugs, you can easily push them away. You definitely will never be a winner if you hurt someone else!

9.) Seek and Destroy

After a while, this whole process is going to start to fade and maybe even worse, go away! To prolong it, try hard to stay in your loser funk. Look for the bad in everything and harp on those things that are meant to feel great. When someone is a winner, they tend to stay away from negativity and surround themselves with daisies and lillies. Instead of watering the positive, get out your garden shears and start hacking away!

10.) Do Absolutely Nothing

One final thing you can do to guarantee that you will stay a loser is nothing. Zilch. Nada. Sit there and think about what you've done. Don't try to make yourself feel better by doing things you love. Winners always do that!

There you have it.

By following these 10 things, you can bet on staying a loser for a good part of your life, if not all of it.

Beware! If you don't follow these things, here's what can happen to you:

- You'll be able to let go

- You won't care about what others do

- You will surround yourself with positive people

- You'll gain a victorious mindset

- You'll learn from your mistakes and be better

- You'll experience true joy

- You'll start hugging and being sweet

- You'll start building yourself up and other people

- You'll start telling yourself that you can do anything

Don't tell me I didn't warn you...

I haven't really thought about it much...you know, that I'm about to have a son. I know it's a big deal but maybe because he's still snuggled tight inside of my belly, it hasn't seemed real yet.

As I was pinning joyfully and giggling to myself about cute, bright bow ties, I suddenly stopped as I read this caption above this pic "25 Rules for Mothers of Sons." I knew I just had to read it!

Can I just say that it's very rare that I'm impressed?

Not that I'm a snob or anything (if I was, would I really admit that?!)

but when I read, I need to be engaged in the first couple of lines, or the writer has lost me...

This article is amazing!!!

From the content to the wording, Tabitha nails every point right on point. Her fluid writing skills are just awesome and the entire thing is just plain brilliant.

I started this book about, oh, 4 years ago haha

What I thought was going to be a small book project, turned into the transformation of a lifetime! Some of you have been with me throughout the process, and have read some of my posts about me writing a book.

For most of you though, this is new to you, and I'm so excited to share it :)

What is Preserved Ministries?

Preserved Ministries is the name of my website and ministry, that's geared towards preserving the purity of ourselves for the Lord. He put it in my heart a while ago to write this book and used my own testimony as fuel. I finally completed it last year, but the actual publishing has been in the editing phase for a while.

My hope and dream with Preserved Ministries is to develop devotions and books, both physical and digital, to help encourage, educate and inspire other Christians in their walk with God. As I grow and learn through Christ, my calling has been to bring forth the inspiring word that may help you as you grow and learn.

What is The Palace Keepers?

Picture your hearts as a beautiful palace. There are a lot of wonderful treasuries inside. Many people around us want those treasures but they don't know how to take care of them the way God wants them to.
A Palace Keeper is someone who guards the palace, monitoring who goes in and out. The Lord has established this job just for you! Why? Because it is your heart and your responsibility.

This job means being a guard of our hearts according to the Lord's instructions. It's about making sure we have the King Jesus as our filter, sitting on the throne, helping us purify every part of our palace.

The Palace Keepers is a book about the purity of the heart and emotional purity.

This is something that I struggled with and was surprised that modern Christianity doesn't even talk about it enough!!

I shop at local thrift stores and I'm addicted to 1950's style clothing, chipped picture frames and that perfect piece of porcelain...

Today I'm pleased to be featuring my first vintage shop!! (whoohoo, happy dance)

I know you guys will appreciate Marsi and her quaint Etsy shop called The Cottage Cheese. Let's see what she has to say about selling vintage!

1.) Who is behind The Cottage Cheese? Tell me about yourself.

My name is Marsi, and I live with my handsome husband and two sweet mutts Molly and Dodge in Chattanooga, Tennessee – a beautiful city nestled in the foothills of the Appalachians. I drink too much coffee, have an insatiable wanderlust, and I am addicted vintage.

2.) Where did that name come from and how did your shop start?

At the time that I opened my Etsy shop, my husband and I were in the business of renovating/restoring historic homes. I was thinking about starting a design website that featured homes of various eras. During a brainstorming session, my husband and I combined our love of food and houses and came up with category names for various home décor/styles: “Ranch Dressing” (ranch homes), “Farm Fresh Eggs” (farmhouses), “Banana Split (levels)”, and “The Cottage Cheese” (cottages & bungalows). The last one was a fun play on words as well as my favorite home style, and thus became the name of my shop and blog.

3.) When did you start collecting?

My parents liked antique furniture, so I grew up with vintage. However, I have only been collecting vintage for about 12 years. I began looking for vintage furniture and rugs to decorate my first home, because it was inexpensive. My husband (then boyfriend) introduced me to mid-century design around that same time, and I was hooked. Having grown up in a home filled with traditional furniture, I was instantly drawn to the more organic mid-century lines.

4.) What do you like most about selling vintage?

Selling vintage allows me to constantly be on a treasure hunt. My husband and I share the love of the “hunt”. We visit almost every local estate sale, and our searches occasionally take us on fun impromptu day trips out of town to pick up Craigslist finds.

5.) What do you think makes your shop stand out?

My shop stands out? Thanks for the compliment! (Blushing). That question is tough to answer. I truly like the items that I choose to sell. Perhaps my affection for these things is apparent when one views my shop.

6.) What do you like to do when NOT collecting?

I take hikes or go camping, work in the garden, watch football, cook & bake, spend time with my dogs, and travel every chance that I get.

7.) What's the best part about running your own shop?

The freedom to make my own schedule. My family is scattered all around the country, and being self-employed (at least for the time being) allows me to travel and see them more frequently.

8.) What do you like about about selling on Etsy?

I love the sense of community and the friends that I have made. I find most sellers to be really supportive of each other. It also makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside when I receive thank you letters and e-mails from my buyers, who tell me a special story about the item that they purchased from my shop.

9.) Any advice you'd like to give other shop owners on Etsy?

List, list, list. The larger the quantity of items you have in stock, the more eyes that see your shop! Also, spending a little extra time on photography will land your items in more treasuries and blog features, resulting in more views. Using Picasa, Photoshop, or even iPhoto (if you have a Mac), you can easily brighten dark images, straighten crooked ones, correct colors, etc.

10.) Where do you see yourself/your business in 10 years?

Where I hope to find myself in 10 years: Living in a small art-filled town somewhere on the Southeastern coast. Owning a shop/gallery that sells original, affordable paintings & mid-century furniture and décor. Spending my evenings and weekends renovating old cottages, doing art, and having clambakes on the beach. And sharing it all with my husband and a couple of pups.

Home Sweet Home

So, we ended our trip a little early than expected...but I've got a praise report!!
Thank you to all who prayed about Jonathan's work situation. He got a call from a previous employer and they needed someone to cover hours, which will work out until Jonathan's new job starts :)

Very exciting! So, we spent three gorgeous days in Virginia and has so much fun with family. It was a nice getaway and though we wanted to stay longer, we counted our blessings and came back home last night.

We arrived at our condo about 2:30am and Jonathan was scheduled to work at 8! My poor Handsome Man...he's such a trooper.

I slept until about 9ish (creative/preggo brain wouldn't shut off!) and puppy girl is still sleeping haha

While we were there, my sister-in-law let us have some fun in her studio and we took really cool maternity shots! We did nice, dramatic ones then silly ones (of course, duh)

Can't wait until she send them to me, so I can share with you!!

BTW, I'm officially in the third trimester...only 13 more weeks left, ahhhh...

I can't wait! It was so fun showing off my belly bump to my niece and nephews.

All in all, it was the perfect mini trip...food, fam, laughs, memories...though I already miss them dearly, it's nice to be in my furry robe, cuddled in my big King-sized bed, enjoying my sweet home...

Schedule?! Blah, who needs one...

Today is the first day of February, and the last day of my mini vaca...which has been amazing BTW!

In the beginning of the year, I introduced to you guys a blog schedule that I thought would be cool. I still think it's cool but I started to notice, especially lately, that I wanted to be, well, more personable and random...since that's me haha

So I tried the schedule for a month and now I'm thinking...who needs one?!

I will still be sharing the same topics and doing giveaways, but not so robotic.

I definitely want to keep these three things:
1.) Fabric Fun Fridays
So much fun!! It may not be every week, but will still give into my fabric obsession.

2.) Spotlight Saturdays

I always want to shine some light on awesome, talented people! Again, may not be every week, but that depends on the number of contacts I get about features.

3.) Devotion Sundays

This day is saved for the Lord! It's such a blessing to me to be able to share what He puts on my heart and connect with you all on a spiritual level. I definitely want to do this every week, even if it's just to share one scripture or an inspirational photo.

I had to take this time-out from my trip to speak about this wonderful person.

Though we live in complete opposite sides of the country, it's amazing how much Dayana and I have in common! We shared our faith, hopes, fears and excitements recently and even sent each other some goodies. She's a beautiful mother to a lovely daughter, Isla and a faithful wife. Her spirit is contagious...you know, the good contagious!

Her care package reflected her heart: big :)

She thought of everyone, not just me. She even sent my puppy a toy!

(not pictured because it's currently in he possession. She won't let it go.)

My heart was truly overwhelmed! We have not even met face to face, and yet Dayana treated me like we have been friends for years. Her hand-written heart notes made me smile :)

Road Trip!

Okay, so my handsome man really needed to get away (which I did too).
With the whole job situation kind of up in the air, it was really weighing down on us and just sitting at home thinking about it was no good.

I wish I had pics to upload, but right now we are enjoying lovely Virginia!!

Last minute, we gathered up our luggage and puppy and headed for Winchester last night.

Right now, it's sunny and gorgeous!

I realized that staying in a house in the middle of a wooded area is not the best for internet signal (duh)

Sunday Devotion: The Daily Struggle

I'm going to be up front and honest...

I'm not where I want to be spiritually or where I need to be.
Every day is a struggle against my flesh: "Should I do this? Should I do that?"

I'm finding it difficult to concentrate on what's important to God because my to-do list that I have in this world doesn't look like there's room for it. Lately, my heart has been heavy and my mind foggy...and I know that's not how it should be.

So I took a moment with Jesus today. I laid out everything and said:
"Lord, why do I always do this to myself? I know what you expect, but I allow myself to get pulled away!"
Then God gave me a word...a word that I've been hearing all week, just not listening to it...do you know what I mean?

This is a word that has been a theme in many Christian lives daily, especially recently.

"DISTRACTION"

Whoa, that hit me so hard!!! Distraction...it's definition says it's the state of being distracted, or mental confusion. Wow! I was allowing myself to get distracted because my mind was in a mental state of confusion.

This got me thinking...how can we possibly listen to God, focus our minds on Him, if our minds are filled with confusion?

Proverbs 8:17 says this:
"I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me."

I know Christianity talks and talks so much about having early morning prayer time, but that's what scripture says! That's what God says!
We need to take time and seek him EARLY before we start planning our day. He will provide us with a clear mind and path. He will direct our thoughts and where they should go.

The Word also says:
"For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints." 1 Corinthians 14:33

If we find ourselves in a confused state, we need to stop and think how it got that way. Obviously, we allowed ourselves to be influenced by the wrong spirit!

The Lord also put this in my heart:
Spiritual growth is a process and we have to go through something if we want to get to a place we've never been!

Think about it...when we travel to somewhere new, it's a journey and adventure.

We don't know what is up ahead but we have directions on how to get there...

Today, and every day, let's take time out in the am to have a conversation with God and to get those clear directions! Even if it's only 10 minutes, it's better than not talking to Him at all.
I'll leave you with this last thought. It's a quote from our CT Superintendent, Bishop Hanson. It just came through my twitter feed this very day:

"To plan your day without first consulting God in prayer is arrogance."

Spotlight Saturday presents Art By Jae

To set the record straight, I didn't feature this next artist because her shop name was similar to mine or her name for that matter...hehe
She's just so super talented!!

Meet Jae, and acrylic and oil painter who is just getting her little Etsy shop started:

1) Can you tell me a little about yourself?I am in love with art! I majored in illustration in college and went on to study art therapy and eventually art education. I am now a high school art teacher in Georgia, and I love my job. It is great to be surrounded by creativity all day, and to be able to come home and work on my own paintings! Most of my paintings are realistic, but I am inspired by anything colorful.

2) When did you start creating art:

I still have a drawing that I made in the 5th grade, so I would say very early on! I have been painting since I was in middle school, taking adult classes at local community colleges and signing up for every art class in high school that I could. I have always loved drawing. My mom likes to tell stories of me being a 2 year old coloring in the lines in my coloring book, and her thinking that was totally normal until my little brother came along!

3) How do you describe your style?

Most of my paintings are realistic, but very colorful. I am inspired by things in nature, and things that are complex. I love painting animals, bicycles, and flowers. I like my paintings to have a modern edge to them, and I never want them to look too stiff. I want them to look alive and bright!

4) Where or who do you get your inspiration from?I am inspired mostly by nature. I love going hiking, camping, and just walking around outside. There are beautiful colors everywhere, and I try to capture that on my canvas.

6) What do you like to do when NOT creating?I love dancing and have recently started taking Zumba classes. I also like taking my dog, Dexter, on walks to the many local parks around Atlanta.

7) What's the best part about being an artist?

The best part about being an artist is bringing something you see in your mind to a physical form. It is an unspoken language that allows others to share in your visions and ideas. It's really a magical thing!

8) If you can peek into any artist's studio, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Definitely Salvador Dali! He is my favorite artist and I love all of his paintings. He was a unique person and had a unique vision of the world. It would be amazing to see how he worked and to be able to ask him about his paintings.

9) What do you like about Etsy?
I love the community of artists on Etsy. It is inspiring to be around so many creative people. It's a great avenue to share art with the world!

10) Where do you see yourself/your art in 10 years?Hopefully I will be showing in many galleries at once, with art around the world. It would be awesome to have one of my paintings in another country, in somebody's home or office. It would be like little pieces of me traveling everywhere at once!

I love the bright colors and the realistic touch.

Urgent Prayers Needed, Please!

Today, I'm getting off the schedule for more important things. If you find it in your heart, I could really use some prayers for my family!

My husband Jonathan's meme is very sick and needs a touch from the Lord. She is being kept in the hospital over night and has had a bad reaction to the stomach flu.

Also, the job situation for Jonathan is in limbo and my heart aches that he cannot seem to catch a break. Lord, please intervene!! Right now, it's a confusing time, and he's very hurt and fragile. He wants to be a great provider for his family, and needs a reliable, steady job! In Jesus Name!

I trust that God has something better, but it seems to be going downhill for him with jobs this last year. He's been through about five jobs in 2011 alone! His faith is getting shaken and I know that the enemy is trying to use it to tear us apart, but we are always on the same team and that will not happen.

Please say a prayer for sweet meme and my hardworking husband. God knows all things and has all power. I trust He has a plan, but we need some peace in our hearts and minds. Amen.

My Fashion Sketches

Okay, lately, I've been sketching almost every day!
Which is a record and I want to move up to sketching at least once a day, but it is a tough commitment.

Throughout art school, we were taught that we must sketch every single day to hone our skills.
Oh, how I miss having someone over my shoulder, telling me what to do haha
(err...what?!)

I guess what I mean is, I miss having a school schedule and having things all laid out for me, you know?
I DO NOT, I repeat, do not miss the work load, drama or critiquing...but I do miss the accountability that my art teachers held us to.

Do you know what I mean?

Anyways...enough about school, I'm getting depressed haha

Goodbye Studio...Hello Nursery

This is a HUGE change for me. You know, beside giving birth to a human being. Luckily they don't deliver full grown...ha

My studio has been replaced! Yup, that square tangerine orange room will soon be the home of our beloved <---(that's a hint of what the baby's name means! Can you guess what the name is? Remember, we're having a boy...)

So my handsome hubby and I moved all of my studio stuff to the basement...

...pretty ptitful, huh? I actually like it! No windows but it's like my own lil' art cave :)
Fortunately, we have two parts to our downstairs: a finished (above photo) and an unfinished, where we have shelving and the washer/dryer (among other things). So, that's where all of my inventory went...

Handsome hubby hooked it up so that I can hang stuff from my pegboards. I organized around the shelves and table. That's where I pack things to ship or let artwork dry.

Still a work in progress, but you know, I'm prepared to make more changes in my life 'cuz I won't have a choice when the baby comes! haha

Okay, back to the nursery...we got our gear on and started priming...

Thumbs up for my hot face mask!! You know you want one...or three...

Wala! Primer is up and looking good!
One thing we noticed did NOT look good...our "white" doors are more of an ivory/yellow next to the white. Yikes! Better do something with that since our trim will be white...

I've been trying to keep the colors hush-hush because I want to really have a cool reveal once it's done!
Plus, I don't want anyone copying me...at least wait until I do it first, then copy AFTER...lol

I just can't keep my mouth shut. Honest.

So, I'll give you a taste...since I am bad at keeping secrets (just ask my handsome)

Sunday Devotion: You're Not Superwoman!

God put this on my heart to write about this week because I was starting to feel overwhelmed. I have a baby on the way, loads of organizing to do, on top of house stuff, dog stuff, church stuff and blog/work stuff...not to mention making time for my handsome prince of a husband. I know that my schedule it not nearly as crazy as many of you and that got me thinking...

Why do we try and be like superwoman all the time?!

In other words, why do we try to use our own "super powers" to handle all these tasks and things, when to be truly honest, we are only ONE person?

That's right...YOU are only one individual, with only one mind and one heart.

God doesn't want us to go around trying to save the world...He already has done that! He doesn't expect you or me to carry the load...because He already did that too!

Isaiah 40:11 says this

"He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young."

I'm not a mom yet, but I know most of you are. Sometimes you can't help but feel like you need to be a superhero because there is just SO much to do. God doesn't want us to be ignorant and ignore our responsibilities, especially with children. BUT His Word says that He will gently lead those who have young little ones.

That's right...we need to let God be the superhero!

"Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee"

The fact is, we are only human and don't have super powers by ourselves (stinks, I know) but if we follow the leading of the Lord, nothing is too hard for Him!

Today, as strong women who are trying to keep together a household, raise a child, speak into a life, live in the Light, be a good wife, run a nifty blog...let's take a moment and tell God this...

"Lord, I'm done trying to be superwoman and trying to do everything through my own power. Please lead me, as YOU have all power and majesty. You know my needs and the needs of my family. You know my heart and hearts of those around me. Help me follow close to you, so that I may be carried by your wings and soar above to true joy and contentment! Amen!"

Spotlight Saturday presents famous Etsy artist Rachel Austin!

Okay, I know every week I'm starting to sound like a record by saying how excited I am for this person and that person to be featured...but I can't help myself.
I'm so excited to be featuring one of my favorite Etsy artists Rachel Austin!! YAY!

You may have seen Rachel's awesome paintings while creating treasuries and you probably have featured some. Well, duh, it's cuz she's so talented and awesome! Not to mention super pretty too, right?

Ms. Austin was so kind to answer questions for me so that I could share with all of you :)

1) Can you tell me a little about yourself?

I'm a full time artist living in Portland, Oregon with my husband, Jon, and our three year old daughter, Adelaide. Jon works with me part time and watches Adelaide. Life gets pretty busy, but we are so blessed to get to spend so much time together. My studio is in my home, just in the basement, nothing fancy. It makes me very happy to be able to work at home, but still have a big space to spread out and leave projects when I'm done for the day. Adelaide is getting to the point now where she'll come down and start painting in a little space I have for her. She is my tiny budding artist.

2) When did you start creating art:

I started painting about 10 years ago. It started off as a hobby, but slowly grew to where it made more sense to be painting full time. It was one of the best decisions I've made. I love to paint - it keeps me balanced and inspired.

3) How do you describe your style?

Simple, bold, happy, quiet, modern, and graphic

4) Where or who do you get your inspiration from?

Quiet moments of beauty. Maps. Aerial views of shapes and patterns in the landscape. Circles. Seeing color combinations in nature that are so beautiful they make my heart hurt.

6) What do you like to do when NOT creating?

I've become obsessed with gardening and plants in general since we bought our house a couple years ago. I love watching things grow, weeding, planting. When I'm not working, I'm usually with my family. We like to have dinner parties, game nights, read big stacks of books, and work on house projects.

7) What's the best part about running your own shop?

Being flexible in my schedule - sometimes my day doesn't start till 6pm. Getting to paint as my job is the greatest kind of work for me.

8) What do you like about selling on Etsy?

I love how easy it is to set up and the instant access to shoppers and lookers all over the globe.

9) Any advice you'd like to give other artists/shop owners?

Be very ambitious. Give yourself deadlines - I book a lot of shows for the year and it keeps me moving and producing new paintings. If a series or idea isn't working, don't be afraid to move on or work on multiple styles at one time.

10) Where do you see yourself/your art in 10 years?

I see myself painting and still loving it. We hope to convert our detached garage into a summer studio - we just added french doors that look out into the garden. Family, painting, gardening, what more could I ask for?

Okay, so, for this Studio Thursday I really need your help...basically, your honest opinion. As I'm trying to organize my studio and getting ready for baby, my mind is filled with all sorts of interior design ideas. I seriously cannot stop thinking about colors and fabrics and projects!!

Pinterest has been my crazy addiction lately.
Can you relate? haha

This last one I adored so much, that I already sketched it out...here it is!

I changed some things, of course, but man I want that chair lol
I used to work for an interior designer as her assistant and even have a certificate in interior decorating. To me, this is just another creative passion but I want to express in artwork.

I just want to start incorporating artwork that reflects life: fashion, hair, home interiors, food, nature, inspirational, children...I don't want to limit my brain because frankly, I can't if I tried!

It's called "Poppies by the Bed"!

So here's what I'd like to do...I have a section in my shop called HOME/FOOD (see it here) and would love to showcase black & white prints, as well as color prints of each of these sketches. I will also like to sell the original drawings in my ORIGINALS section (see it here.)

I have "Poppies by the Bed" already up (here) but I want to know what do YOU think about these drawings? Are they cool enough that people will like to own a print for their home?

Help, My Preggo Brain is Taking Over!!

Here we are at Christmas :)

Okay, seriously, this pregnancy thing has been going great. Not gonna lie. I feel pretty awesome, no sickness and my energy level is sweet.

BUT I cannot shut off my dumb brain!!

Do you know what time it is right now, as I'm writing this post?? 4:40am!! Uh yeah, I know...

Help, I have preggo brain, and I can't stop it! lol

This month has been by far the worse case of pregnancy brain. I've been super-duper forgettful (more than normal) and at night, I toss and turn because ideas/thoughts/memories fly through my mind like Grand Central.

Hence, how I came about writing this! haha

Here's just some of the things I've experienced (from what I can remember):

- Making egg salad, I grabbed a bowl from the cabinet and started mixing everything into it, only to find that halfway through there was an empty bowl already waiting on the counter. Cannot remember taking out the first bowl and just gave it a death stare, like it jumped out on purpose to make me feel like a loser!

- My spelling is normally not good (praise the Lord for spell check!) However, I've been finding myself lapsing in knowledge as I type/talk/read...you mean, opportunity is not spelles opputunititie?

- Was talking to my handsome prince about something and there was a pause. Yup, thought process totally ~~illiminated~~! (uh eliminated)

- I got the idea of how I wanted my blog to be made over (do you like it BTW?) Ended up getting out of bed at 5:30am and re-made the layout, created ALL the pages & content, created the advertising chart, and renewed my url address so that my blog is now my official website!

I know there are many more things to list, but ~~frankyl~~ frankly, it's 5am now and my mind is foggy...but clear at the same time...if that makes sense...

Recipe: How to Make S'Mores Bars

Happy Monday!
Now, who wants to break their New Year's diet resolution already??

Frankly, I'm pregnant so I can pretty much do what I want...ha! I'm more of a salty/chips snacker but lately my hormones have me craving chocolate like mad. Of course, my handsome prince of a husband LOVES this because then he has an excuse to indulge.

So, I busted out this recipe I've had for a while for S'Mores Bars. S'Mores are my absolute favorite and I knew instantly that this recipe would be my golden ticket to calorie bliss...I mean, chocolate bliss...yea...

Okay, here's what you will need, my friends:
- 2 sticks unsalted butter, melted (plus a little more for the pan)

- 18 graham crackers (about 2 packages)

- 1/4 cup sugar

- 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt

- 3 cups milk chocolate chips

- 3 1/2 cups mini-marshmallows

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line the bottom and sides of a 13x9" baking pan with foil. You want to leave about 4in. of overhang over the 2 opposite sides. These will serve as "handles" to remove the bars from the pan in one piece. Grease the foil well with some of the softened butter.

In your food processor, grind the graham crackers into a fine meal (you need 2 cups.) In a large bowl, combine your crumbs with the sugar, sea salt and melted butter. The mixture should look like and feel like wet sand. Set aside 1/2 cup of the crumb mixture for the topping.

Evenly press the rest of the mixture into the bottom of the pan.

**Note: This took me a little while because you don't want any spaces, or else your crust will be crumbly. I used the back of a small spoon to even and smooth the layer.**

Pop your crust into the oven and bake until it is golden brown, about 12-15 min. Remove the pan from the oven and allow it to cool on a rack or on a dishtowel on the counter.

Melt the milk chocolate in a saucepan over low heat, stirring continuously until fully melted. Do not turn up the heat to hurry the process!! Keep it on low. You can also microwave your chocolate on low power, stirring after 2 min.

Preheat the broiler, low setting.

**Note: I never used my broiler before this and didn't know there were two settings. Yikes! I almost burnt the crud out of my bars! Besides the nice smokey smell in the air and the lovely music from the fire alarm (which made puppy girl's ears go CRAZY btw), the bars did not burn. Phew!**

Pour the melted chocolate over the cooked crust. Spread it evenly with a butter knife or back of a spoon. Sprinkle the marshmallows over the chocolate and press them lightly into it. Sprinkle or lightly press the reserved crumb mixture over and in between the marshmallows, so that no chocolate shows through.

Broil the bars 6 in. from the flame until the marshmallows are golden brown (not coal black like mine hehe) Should take 1-2min.

Refrigerate the bars until the chocolate is hard, about 2 hrs or so. Grab the ends of the foil and lift the bars out of the pan in one piece. Place on cutting board and cut into 24 squares. Wala!! Eat up & enjoy!!

Sunday Devotion: A Spiritual Battlefield

"That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God."

1 Corinthians 2:5

Time and time again, we find ourselves in the midst of tribulation. We are sometimes just happily walking along, when BAM!, a situation or trial slaps us right in the dome. It's funny isn't it?

Having a daily walk with God requires us to take responsibility for our thoughts and actions. We can easily get sidetracked by life and when these tribulations come, we end up being totally unprepared...or worse...we equip the wrong armour.

In His Word, God showed me some things. As a Christian, we have new life and therefore should have new weapons. These should always be equipped BEFORE the battle. Sometimes we mess up and are too in tune with our humanity, or our flesh, and try to use carnal weapons.

By battle, I mean anything you come up against, such as music influences, fitting in with friends, relationships at work or school. Every day we have to be prepared to protect our hearts and minds.

II Corinthians 10:3-6 reveals so much about why:

"For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled."

If we want to be obedient to Jesus, we must equip the weapons of the spirit and not of the flesh! Without the right weapons, strongholds don't get pulled down, they actually get built higher! Without the right weapons, imaginations that are not healthy and not right will not be cast down, but exalted!

If we fight with anger and rage instead of peace and love, before we know it, we are eating a mouthful of dirt. There is no victory using weapons of the flesh, however, the weapons of the spirit are always victorious because they are from the Almighty!

Today, think about the battle that you are in and ask God to reveal to you which weapons you have equipped. Ask Him to show you how to use the spiritual weapons. After all, the battlefield doesn't take place on this earth...it's a spiritual war. We can't win with carnal weapons! Equip yourself today and proclaim victory in the spirit!

"Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints."

Okay, so you know when you come across a shop and your mouth literally drops open? Then you feel dumb because no one is around and you're home alone? But then it's replaced by pure excitement for finding something awesome? That's how I felt when I checked out Creative Corks N More!

Introducing Tanita & Devon, the creative brains behind Creative Corks N More

My mind was blown away by their items and I'm not the only one. With just a little under a year of opening shop, Tanita & Devon have had over 1250 sales!! Wowzers!! I sent them some questions about their shop, who they were and what advice they had for other shop owners. Here's what they said:

1.) Who is behind Creative Corks 'N More? Who are you guys? Creative Corks N' More is operated by Tanita & Devon; A very happily engaged couple! Creating is something of a passion for us, which we love to share with others.

2.) When did you start creating? Devon and I have both grown up in crafty families so creating has always been daily activities for both of us in our childhood lives. We decided to start sharing our creations on Etsy in March of 2011 and since then, all of our dreams have come true. Both of us have been able to successfully quit our day jobs and we would not feel any more blessed than we do now.

3.) In your own words, what makes your shop stand out? I would say that the main thing that makes our shop stand out is our originality. All of our products are one of a kind and made with either recycled, reused, or repurposed materials.

4.) What does handmade mean to you? Handmade to us is something that is made by someone, with their thoughts, their passion and their time going into it. Handmade is not mass-produced and is not created solely by machinery. It is created by hand. When you buy handmade, you are buying more than a product. You are buying a story.

5.) Where or who do you get your inspiration from? We believe that there is a purpose for everything and the inspiration to create comes from absolutely anything. I would say that our main inspiration comes from the recycled materials we are working with.

6.) What do you like to do when NOT creating? At this point in time, there is not a time that we are not creating. Since we have both been blessed with the opportunity of quitting our days jobs, we are able to dedicate our heart, soles, and every minute of our time to our shop.

7.) What's the best part about running your own shop? The best part of being self employed is the flexibility and being our own bosses. There is nothing that I love more than being business partners with my friend who is also the love of my life.

8.) What's do you like about selling on Etsy? Without a doubt, the community. We absolutely love interacting with other artists!

9.) Any advice you'd like to give other shop owners on Etsy? Honestly, I could go on and on with the tips and advice that I would love to share with fellow shop owners. The best advise I can give is to self promote! Promote is Etsy Teams, Social Networking Sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and have beautiful pictures of your products so others want to share your items on Pinterest, in Treasuries, and on blogs! Self promotion is key to a successful business!

10.) Where do you see yourself/your business in 10 years? This is a very difficult question for us! We tend to focus on all of our short term goals and have never thought about 10 years down the road. I can only image how our business will evolve in the next ten years.

Studio Thursday: Tutorial, How To Make a Homemade Lightbox in 7 Steps

Okay, so, I needed a quick, easy and of course cheap way to photograph my plates.

My deal is I have no white walls in my condo...not one. To makes my plates pop, I really wanted a white background. So I came across this link for a tutorial on how to create an inexpensive lightbox (here.)

The instructions were easy! Plus, I already had all the stuff on-hand.

I changed things a little, but here is my version on how to make a homemade lightbox, in only 7 steps...ready?

What you will need:
One medium to large cardboard box
(depends on how big your items are that you want to photograph.)

Tape

A box cutter

Black Marker/Sharpie

3 pieces of white tissue paper

A large piece of white cardstock

1.) Tape the bottom of your box. This needs to be secure because it will be the back of your lightbox.

2.) Using the box cutter, cut off all four cardboard flaps that line your box.

3.) Using the marker, draw big rectangles on only three sides of your box.

4.) Using the box cutter, cut out the rectangles. Your box should now have three windows, two on the sides and one on the top.

5.) Take the tissue paper, and tape to the outside of the three windows. Make sure you smooth the paper out and that there are no holes. It's okay if it's a little wrinkled.

6.) Take the large piece of white cardstock, measure and cut so that it will fit as your box's background and floor. This will give a nice white space inside of your lightbox. Secure with tape.

7.) Take two lamps and shine them on either side of your new lightbox! You can play around with the light and the bulbs. **Note: The brighter/clearer the bulbs, the brighter/clear the photo.

Now your ready to set-up and shoot!! See how easy that was?! Mind-blowing...

Here's what my setup looked like in my nice cozy lightbox. I wanted it to look like a mantle or shelf.

Ta-da!! After taking photos, I uploaded/cropped/edited it to the look I wanted. See how nice?

The other day, I was searching for tutorials on DIY baby clothes when I stumbled upon a link to how to make your own fabric designs...when I clicked, I was directed to Spoonflower!

Now, this may be something that some of you already know about, but for a novice like me, I feel like I hit the jackpot lol

Here is just a brief description of what I know about Spoonflower. Be sure to check out their website for wayy more in-depth info!

- You can create and upload your own design to be printed on fabric for your DIY projects or handmade items you create using fabric.

- If you order fabric with your own design, you get a designer discount!

- You can sell your design to other people! After you design a fabric, you must order a swatch and approve the look. Once you approve the design, you can make it public for other people to buy, and you get 10% of each sale! Swatches are only $5.

- You can have a shop featuring all your designs, with a banner and avatar, just like Etsy! There's also a marketplace to browse tons of other people's designs, mingle with the designers, and enter contests.

Homemaker Mondays: Tennis Balls Static Tip

Hey ya'll! Welcome to another Homemaker Monday :)

I just wanted to share with you a cool tip I've been dying to try.

Do you have a pillow that is always lumpy when you try and dry it in the dryer?

Or sweaters/blankets/etc that have tons of static?

Throw a couple of tennis balls in there!

The tennis balls helps gets the pillows nice and fluffy; and they also eliminate lots of static out of fabric.

Pretty cool huh?

Recently, I've been really aware of what words I use when I speak. I'm not saying I'm great at stopping the wrong ones before I blurt them out...I'm just recognizing how they have an impact. I'm working towards being better filtered with my words, and that really got me thinking...

With just one word, we can move mountains!!

"For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith."

Mark 11:23

How powerful of a thought is that?

Okay, so maybe not REAL mountains...but think of all the obstacles you have daily.

If your words are "I can't do this" or "Nothing will ever change", do you know what you are telling that problem you're facing? "It's okay to stay in my way."

But it's not okay! You know it!

However, replacing that "I can't" with "I can" tells the mountain
"Hey, you are not the boss of me, so back off!"

Today, I encourage you to think before you speak. Especially if you are about to speak concerning a problem in your life.

You know what? Speak to that problem out loud! Try it!

Get yourself alone and speak into the air "You are not in charge of me and I can make it, so move!"

Don't let a season in your life define your lifetime.

That depression you face every morning or that loneliness that haunts at night DOES NOT define your life! It only can if you let it...but you have the power in your words to say "MOVE!!"

1.) Can you tell me a little about yourself?
I am German illustrator based in London.
Before I decided to devote all of my time to the world of illustration, I have studied Fashion Design and have worked as an Interior Designer, which has shaped and influenced my hand-drawn illustrations and digital collages.

2.) When did you start creating art?
I've started to get interested and creating art when I was about 16 years old.

3.) How would you describe your style?
My style of my female portraits are often described as quirky, colorful, enigmatic and sophisticated characters with an edge. But I try not to describe my own style for myself, as I want my work to speak for itself.

4.) What does handmade mean to you?
The word 'handmade' means to me that there has been crafted an item with the hands and with the heart. Something which is special and not only created to make money.

5.) Where or who do you get your inspiration from?
I get always inspired by faces or characters found in movies, books and people which I call my friends or which I see on the streets.

6.) What's the best part about running your own shop?
That best part about running my shop is that I have the freedom to decide what I feel is best and right at the moment in time.

7.) Where do you see yourself/your business in 10 years?
Life can change so quickly and surprise you with events you can't see coming, that's why I don't like to make plans for myself nor my business. But I hope that I will be happy and healthy in 10 years time, doing what I love - whatever this might be.

Studio Thursday: Illustration Plate Photoshoot

I had so much fun shooting these plates!

Every time I create one, I just can't wait to take a photo of it.

I don't have too much to work with for wall space here at my condo. So to hang up these plates and arrange them to get that nice wall plate collage-collection effect is tough.

So I decided to just put down paper on the floor, so that I can create an illusion that they are hanging...or at least, on display somewhere where there's a nice white wall :)

I tried to arrange them like I would on a wall. Photographing a shiny surface is tricky. If I try to take the photo straight on, I''ll just get a face full of flash! Not cool. So this angle seems to work I think.

Once I upload the photos, I adjust the shadow/brightness/contrast, crop and wala!

They came out like this:

...looks like someone is just not amused or entertained by my idea...

Do you have ideas for a better way to showcase my plates?!

Today, I wanted to share with you some awesome hairstyles that I've found while web surfing. I usually use these photos as inspiration for my hand-drawn illustration plate designs.

Now, tell me these aren't amazing!!

Anne Hathaway is my favorite celeb inspiration!

She is classy and super talented. Her style is timeless.

Love Taylor Swift and her hair!! Every photo I see of her, her hair just inspires me.

Not to mention she can sing pretty well too :)

I need to learn how to do this!! Carrie Underwood has this likeable quality that I can't get enough of. Love her style, so inspirational and classic.

I love the front but I wish I could see the back of this hairstyle!

Natalie Portman is another classy actress whose style is inspiring.

Homemaker Mondays: Lampshade Cleaning & Layered Cake (Yum)

Okay, I'm not one to label.

So when I call myself a "housewife" or "homemaker", I use it loosely. I don't think much of myself in the "domestic" department but I'm a creative person and it works out (sometimes).

To kick off the New Year, I will be trying to keep more scheduled posts with interesting, fun things that I like.

Here's the first of Jacy's "Homemaker Mondays"!

Cooking, baking, cleaning, recipes...whatever I find helpful or yummy. Okay, here goes...hope you enjoy and let me know if you did :)

(Look at these awesome wallpaper lampshades by Susan Schneider. Gorgeous!)

Simple Lampshade Cleaning: Don't you just hate dusty lampshades? I couldn't stand using paper towels, regular towels or wipes to try and clean them! The dust just balled up and made a mess.

SOLUTION: Use a sticky lint roller!! I found this out when we got our dog, Jackie, two years ago. She's a husky so we use lint rollers like toilet paper. Just take the roller and swipe it in a downward motion on the lampshade. Instantly clean and you can just rip the gross dusty paper and throw away!

Cold Cake Layering: Okay, you know what frosts me? When you're trying to make a layered cake, and as you frost it, the cake starts crumbling! Ugh!

SOLUTION: Put the layers in the freezer first for 20 minutes! When the cake is out of the oven, let it cool a bit, about 10-15 minutes. Then, after you cut the cake to how many layers you need, take each layer of cake and put it on a plate in the freezer. Be careful to watch the time. 20 minutes later, you'll have the layers good to go to start frosting!

Mmm...cake...try this recipe!!

Sunday Devotion: Spring Forth into the New!

Wow, I don't know about you, but 2011 was a doozy! I had some very great moments but I also had great reflections. One thing for me, 2011 was very much about looking at myself ONLY in how I am as a Christian.

It's so easy to look at others, but God really worked on me (and is continually working on me) to perfect myself ONLY...because really, we can't change others, ONLY HE can!

I love these verses in Isaiah 43:18-19. It helps me remember that the past is old, and God doesn't want us to dwell on the old junk because He has brand new things coming our way!

"Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert."

How amazing is that! The Lord says "Don't remember the old things because I'm doing a new thing!"

So today, forgive yourself for the things that happened this past year. Approach God with an open and repentant heart, and ask Him to forgive you as well. Don't let your walk be hindered by the mistakes of the past...we are not perfect but the Lord Jesus is perfecting us! Tell yourself that "2012 is a new year and God has new things for me!!"

New Blog Schedule in the New Year

Wow, I cannot believe Christmas is already over!

To kick off the new blog year, I was thinking I needed to make my posts more frequent and with more purpose.

This new blog schedule will help with two things:

1.) I will be more organized by topics so that...

2.) ...you will have more confidence in my blog & interact more :)

So without further ado, starting January 2nd 2012 (next Monday) here is what my new blog schedule will (hopefully) be.

HOMEMAKER MONDAYS: I will be sharing any home projects I'm working on (before & afters), recipes, cleaning/cooking tips, and anything else home/family/marriage/mommy related.

FREEBIE TUESDAYS: You'll love Tuesdays! This will be when I announce new giveaways, whether on my blog or one that is hosting a giveaway for me, and where I will announce the winners. Yay for free stuff!!

LAID-BACK WEDNESDAYS: Since this is the middle-of-the-week day, it will be an open topic day where I will share thoughts, what's on my mind, and anything I find cool or interesting.

STUDIO THURSDAYS: On this day, I will be sharing with you behind-the-scene studio shots of the creating process, sneak peeks at new illustrations and design projects, tutorials for anything crafty & artsy, and ideas that I need opinions on.

FABRIC FUN FRIDAY: This theme is totally staying because you guys love it so much! I do too, so on Fridays, I will continue to showcase some fantastic fabrics and some cool ways people use fabric to create.

SPOTLIGHT SATURDAYS: All right, this will be so much fun! Who doesn't like the spotlight? Every Saturday I will feature an artist or Etsy shop owner that I admire, share photos of their work, and maybe even an interview.If you would like to sign up for a feature, comment below that you would and provide your email!

DEVOTION SUNDAYS : I'm a lover of Christ and cannot possibly be doing what I'm doing without Him! Sundays will be exclusively devoted to God. Pregnancy Update: "I'm having a..."

BOY!!!!

How cool is that? He was so adorable in there today, being cooperative so the ultrasound tech could check him all out...and there is NO denying he's a boy! (get what I mean?)

21.5 weeks and 15 ounces. What an awesome Christmas present for my husband and I, to know the gender during this beautiful season as we celebrate Jesus' birth!!

Taking a break...

Hey guys!

I know I've done this before so for some of you this may not be a new thing.

I am taking a break from social media and Etsy for the next two weeks.

Right now, God has placed in my heart that I must seek Him in ALL things, including my business.

As some of you know, I am currently writing a book.

This book is God's project and it's close to being finished. So, to keep my mind clear of other "voices" and to focus on the One Voice I need to hear, I won't be blogging, facebooking, twittering, or Etsying for a while.

I urge you to try it sometime. There is a freedom from it that I cannot explain.

Some people fast from food..but the truth is, giving up what you want to do most for the Lord and asking Him to take control is so rewarding.

I thank you for your patience and understanding. May you be encouraged to step out on your faith, and pray without ceasing, that His Name be glorified in your life, through everything.

Meet My Twins!

Okay, I haven't really introduced my family on here but today meet my twins!

Melina and Nikko are my youngest siblings. We are a clan of four (I'm the oldest, then Leani our sister, and then the twins.) They turned 9 years old recently and I took them to the park for a fun photoshoot!

Now, I'm not a photographer but I love the camera and being creative with the kids :)

We Speak To Inspire

Lately, I've been really wanting to have an outlet or forum where people can share their inspiring quotes, sayings, poetry, writing, etc.

I wasn't sure what to do but today I figured it out...I created a new Etsy Team!

It's called "We Speak to Inspire" and it's geared to be positive and uplifting through the power of the spoken and/or written words.

Words are SO powerful! Just think about it...it only took God to speak light into existence!

Amazing. Every day, we use words. Sometimes we forget their power and abuse this privilege. Words can uplift, encourage, build up and inspire! OR they can hurt, tear down, discourage and belittle.

Daily, I'm trying to make my words count towards the positive. Whatever I utter, I want Jesus to be pleased. I want my speech to be Christ-like and not just my image.

Introducing Art By Jacy Fashion Illustration Plates

Before I announce all the details, I wanted to first announce that these hand-drawn (by yours truly) fashion plates are each unique. Each plate is vintage or up-cycled from local thrift stores. I actually sketch the drawing on the plate first and illustrate with a non-toxic paint pen. Though they can be dishwasher safe, I HIGHLY recommend a soft hand washing. Do not use abrasive materials. You want to keep the pretty picture as long as possible! :)
